Good News & First Friday Youth Group!

We're super excited about this upcoming weekend! Not only will we have our extended First Friday youth group for Middle School (6:30 - 9:00 PM, pick-up and drop-off in the Welcome Center) and our regular, Sunday youth group at 10:15 AM (Middle School – Room 300, High School – Room 209), but we also just got brand new sets of Bibles, Books of Common Prayer (BCPs), and games for Room 300!

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: what’s the big deal about books and shelving? One of the big things we want to do is show our youth how exciting our sacred stories can be and build on the work of Godly Play, by giving them the opportunity to open up the Bible to explore, question, and discuss for themselves. More importantly, scripture and prayer can be incredibly powerful resources for youth who are finding their voice and identity in the person God made them to be.

The Bibles and BCPs that we were using had been handed down from other ministries with a lot of wear and tear. Now, there is NOTHING wrong with a standard printing of the Bible or BCP, but having books that have a welcoming cover, chapter introductions designed to help youth and leaders understand what’s happening, and translations that are accurate and easy to understand will really impact our time together. Plus adding new games like Exploding Kittens, Apples to Apples, Tickets to Ride, and more just means that we're going to have more ways to play and build community together!

As we look for ways to make youth group even more fun and joyful, we know that this investment will also give us an opportunity to dig deeper and grow closer as a community. So this Friday when we pray Compline together at the end of the night (after dinner, Cathedral games, and fellowship of course!) we'll be able to use brand new prayer books, and on Sunday we'll be able to share our sacred stories from our new Bibles. Good news, indeed!

We're down to the last month of youth group and we’re excited to be preparing for our Youth Sunday Service on May 13, which will close the year for youth and children’s formation. We will celebrate our graduating seniors that day so hope to see all of them here! We are really encouraging as many youth as possible to be at youth group the next four weeks to help us prepare for Youth Sunday. Here are all the dates that you need to know: This week, April 15: Fr Broderick will lead us in an Instructed Eucharist in St Martin’s Chapel during formation hour, 9:15-10:15. Following, because they will have already worshiped, youth are invited to walk together to Pablo’s on Pennsylvania for coffee, tea, hot cocoa etc and pastries. We did ask youth who are scheduled to serve at the 10:30 to try to find a substitute, but of course if they prefer to stay and serve we support them wholeheartedly! Gotta Serve Somebody - Why YES Mission Trips & Registration Information!

Last week we announced the Diocesan Mission Trips St. John's will be participating in - including one that we are excited about hosting! Registrations can be turned in starting this Sunday (Jan. 21) and there are a limited number of spots, so please sign up EARLY by clicking on the trip below and returning the form and deposit to John Putnam or Tina Clark by the appropriate deadline. I am so pleased to be here and have enjoyed beginning to get to know everyone.
